Solar for Dubai homeowners: your AC is writing DEWA's invoice

Villas and townhouses burn most of their electricity on cooling, in the sunniest hours of the day. That is exactly the power a rooftop system produces. Here is what that means for your home.

Why your bill climbs

DEWA charges your home in slabs, and summer lives in the dear ones

Every home starts each month in the cheapest band. The more you use, the more each extra unit costs, so the AC-heavy summer months push your last units into rates up to 65% higher than your first. Solar wipes out those most expensive units first.

On top of the slabs, a fuel surcharge of about 6 fils applies to every unit. Verify current rates at dewa.gov.ae.

What homes like yours pay

Three familiar homes, three familiar bills

Typical AC-driven Dubai consumption profiles, walked through the slabs above. If your own bill is higher, solar helps more, not less: the extra units are the expensive ones.

3-bed townhouse

Around 1,900 kWh a month, so the whole month sits in the Green band. 1,900 kWh at 23 fils, plus about 6 fils fuel surcharge on each unit, comes to roughly AED 551 a month.

A modest rooftop system can offset most or all of it, and every kWh it replaces is a kWh you never buy.

4-bed detached villa

Around 3,000 kWh a month: 2,000 kWh in the Green band at 23 fils, then 1,000 kWh in the Yellow band at 28 fils, plus the surcharge: roughly AED 920 a month.

This is our worked example across the site: a ≈19 kWp system covers it, saving ≈ AED 11,040 a year if bought, or ≈ AED 230 a month under a PPA with AED 0 down.

5-bed villa

Around 3,800 kWh a month: 2,000 kWh at 23 fils, the next 1,800 kWh in the Yellow band at 28 fils, plus the surcharge on all of it: roughly AED 1,192 a month.

Homes at this level are brushing the Orange band every hot month. Solar strips out the dearest units first, so the saving per panel is at its best.

Estimates, not a quote. Final figures depend on a site survey and DEWA approval. Your actual consumption decides everything; the savings calculator accepts your real bill.

Will it suit the house?

Every Dubai roof takes panels differently, and discreetly

The most common homeowner worry after price is looks. A good design works with the architecture, not against it.

Flat roofs

Most Dubai villas have them, and they are the easiest case: panels sit on tilted frames angled for yield, usually invisible from the street behind the parapet wall. The roof stays walkable and serviceable.

Pitched roofs

Panels flush-mount parallel to the tiles, following the roofline with a low profile. On the right elevation they read as part of the roof rather than an addition to it.

Hidden-from-street options

If kerb appeal is non-negotiable, the layout can prioritise rear- and inner-facing roof planes and low-tilt mounting. The survey checks sight lines from the street before a single panel is ordered.

Solar for Dubai apartments

In an apartment?

The roof belongs to the building, but that is not a dead end

An apartment's share of the roof is not yours to build on, so individual installations need building-owner approval. In practice, most apartment enquiries convert into building-wide projects arranged with the owners association: shared roof, shared saving.

If you are on the owners association board, or willing to raise it there, we will prepare the numbers that make the conversation easy.

What to do next

Send us the building, not just the flat

Tell us the building name, the approximate number of units and who manages it. An engineer will reply by email with the practical options for your building, including what a building-wide system does to the service charge conversation.

Two ways onto the roof

Free under a PPA, or owned outright: both end in a smaller bill

Path one

Free solar (PPA)

AED 0 upfront; you buy the power at a rate below DEWA's

We install, own, insure and maintain the system for a fixed term of 10–25 years. Your bill drops from the first month; ownership options apply at the end of the term.

Path two

Buy your system

4–6 yrs typical payback, then decades of output you own

One turnkey price, the whole saving is yours, and the panels typically carry 25-year warranties. The biggest lifetime number of the two routes.
