Solar inverters in the UAE: types, sizing and price
A solar inverter turns the direct current (DC) your panels produce into the alternating current (AC) your home or business runs on, and it is the part of a solar system that talks to DEWA's grid. In the UAE you rarely buy one on its own: for a grid-connected system under Shams Dubai, the inverter is specified, approved and priced as part of a turnkey installation. This guide covers inverter types, DEWA's equipment rules, sizing for Dubai heat and where the inverter sits in the price.
What does a solar inverter actually do?
The inverter does three jobs. It tracks the panels' maximum power point so the array delivers as much energy as conditions allow. It converts that DC into grid-quality AC at the right voltage and frequency. And it acts as a safety device: if the grid fails, a grid-tied inverter must stop exporting so it cannot energise lines that DEWA engineers may be working on. DEWA's Shams Dubai standards require this loss-of-mains protection at the point of connection, which is why a standard rooftop system switches off during a power cut.
Modern inverters are efficient: Huawei's datasheet for its SUN2000-KTL-M2 three-phase range lists a maximum efficiency of 98.65%. The real differences lie in heat tolerance, monitoring, battery compatibility and shade handling.
Which type of solar inverter suits a UAE home or business?
There are four main families. The right one depends on roof layout, shading, whether you want a battery and the size of the site.
| Type | How it works | Typical fit in Dubai | Points to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| String inverter | Panels wired in series strings feed one wall-mounted inverter | Unshaded villa roofs; small and mid-size commercial roofs | Shade on one panel can pull down a whole string |
| Hybrid inverter | A string inverter with a battery port, managing panels, battery and grid together | Sites wanting backup now or a battery-ready design | Backup circuits need separate wiring |
| Microinverter | A small inverter behind each panel, converting to AC on the roof | Complex or partly shaded roofs with panels facing several directions | More electronics on a hot roof; confirm DEWA eligibility |
| Central inverter | One large unit fed by many strings via combiner boxes | Very large commercial, industrial and ground-mounted plants | Needs a cooled plant room; single point of failure |
For most Dubai villas, a string or hybrid inverter is the default. Large warehouse and factory roofs often use several three-phase string inverters rather than one central unit, spreading the risk of a fault.
Why does DEWA approval matter for solar inverters in the UAE?
For a system connected under Shams Dubai, the inverter is not a free choice. DEWA publishes an eligibility process for PV equipment and maintains a list of eligible equipment, updated periodically. To be listed, an inverter must hold certificates from ILAC-accredited third-party labs covering safety (IEC 62109-1/2 or UL 1741), harmonics and electromagnetic compatibility (IEC 61000 series), plus compliance testing against DEWA's own Distributed Renewable Resources Generation (DRRG) standards. DEWA's Shams Dubai FAQ says equipment from an unlisted manufacturer can be used only if it complies with DEWA standards and proof is submitted under the same eligibility requirements.
This is why buying a cheap inverter online is a false economy: an ineligible unit will not pass DEWA inspection or be connected for net metering. The full process is in our Shams Dubai net metering guide.
How should an inverter be sized for Dubai heat?
Inverter sizing comes down to the DC/AC ratio: the panels' peak rating in kWp divided by the inverter's AC rating in kW. Panels rarely reach nameplate output on a hot roof, so designers often connect slightly more DC than the AC rating, within manufacturer limits. Huawei's datasheet, for instance, rates its 12 kW model for up to 18 kWp of panels and its 20 kW model for up to 30 kWp. Push the ratio too far and the inverter "clips" output on the brightest hours, which in Dubai are many.
Heat is the second constraint. Inverters reduce output (derate) to protect themselves when they get too hot. DEWA's DRRG standards address this directly: an inverter must cope with maximum temperatures with a power derating of no more than 25% of its rated power at an ambient temperature of 50 °C, which DEWA treats as the maximum outdoor value. Datasheets often list operating ranges up to 60 °C, but output can fall before that limit, so check the derating curve. Installation matters as much as hardware:
- Mount inverters out of direct sun, on a north-facing wall, under a canopy or in a ventilated plant room.
- Keep the manufacturer's clearances; never box an inverter into a sealed cupboard.
- Choose a DC/AC ratio from a yield model for your roof, not a rule of thumb.
How long does a solar inverter last compared with the panels?
Panels are designed for a long life, and our estimates assume 25 years. Inverters are power electronics working hard in heat, and their warranties are usually shorter. For example, Huawei's global residential warranty policy lists a 10-year standard warranty for its single-phase SUN2000-L1 inverters outside China and India. Plan for at least one inverter replacement over the panels' life, and check who handles warranty claims locally. Under a PPA, the provider owns and maintains the system, so inverter replacement is their cost, not yours.
What is the solar inverter price in the UAE?
Most Dubai buyers never see a separate line for the inverter, and that is deliberate. A grid-connected system is quoted as a turnkey price per kWp that already includes panels, inverter, mounting, cabling, protection, DEWA applications and commissioning. Our calculator uses an indicative turnkey price of AED 3,000 per kWp for homes and AED 2,400 per kWp for commercial roofs, where scale lowers unit costs.
On those figures, a 10 kWp villa system would be roughly AED 30,000 installed and a 100 kWp commercial roof roughly AED 240,000, with the inverter (or inverters) inside each total. A hybrid inverter and any battery add to that. Retail inverter prices vary with brand and rating, so your survey quote itemises the hardware specified for your roof.
Figures are estimates, not a quote. Final numbers depend on a site survey and DEWA approval.
If you would rather not buy hardware at all, free solar under a PPA with AED 0 upfront puts the inverter, its warranty and its replacement on the provider. If you prefer to own the system, see what buying a solar system outright involves, or estimate your system size and payback first.
Do I need a hybrid inverter for a battery?
Only if you want storage now or soon. Under Shams Dubai, net metering credits your exports, and DEWA states grid-connected systems do not require storage. A hybrid inverter earns its place when you want backup for critical circuits or plan to add a battery later. Our article on whether a battery is worth it with net metering explains when that is true.
What changes for commercial three-phase systems?
Most Dubai commercial and many larger residential connections are three-phase. DEWA's DRRG standards state that three-phase inverters are preferred for low-voltage connections. Single-phase units are limited to 10 kW per line conductor, and total generation must stay balanced across the phases within a maximum imbalance of 5 kW. Offices, warehouses and factories therefore use three-phase inverters matched to the switchboard and connection capacity.

Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a solar inverter in the UAE and install it myself?
Not for a grid-connected system in Dubai. The inverter must meet DEWA's eligibility requirements, and DEWA requires installation by enrolled contractors and qualified solar PV electricians before it will connect the system under Shams Dubai.
Does a grid-tied solar inverter work during a power cut?
No. DEWA requires loss-of-mains protection, so it shuts down when the grid fails. Backup needs a hybrid inverter, a battery and separately wired circuits.
Is a microinverter better than a string inverter in Dubai?
Not automatically. Microinverters help on shaded or multi-direction roofs. On a clear roof, a well-placed string inverter is simpler to maintain because it sits off the hot roof.
How much does the inverter add to a solar quote?
It is included in the turnkey per-kWp price, not added on top. A hybrid inverter or battery increases the total and should be itemised in your quote.
